The importance of data encryption is stressed by the ICO

Redstor posted in Cloud backup | 9 Sep 2013

Is your data safely encrypted and stored securely? The Data Protection Act requires that if an organisation stores personal information, they must have appropriate measures in place to keep that data secure. If the loss of that data would cause distress to those it refers to, then it must be encrypted. The increase of BYOD and the use of consumer file sharing and collaboration services in the workplace has made complying with this guidance more difficult.

In particular, the need to access files on multiple, often employee owned, devices means that it is increasingly difficult for IT administrators to remain in control of where and how files are stored. The Information Commissioner’s office (ICO) have recently blogged about the importance of encryption and how to ensure it is used effectively here.

The ICO have recently imposed fines totaling £700,000 on organisations who have not properly encrypted their data illustrating that the cost of not complying with encryption and data security guidelines is indeed often far greater than the cost of implementing proper security. Redstor’s range of secure file sync and share and online backup services for the public and private sectors feature strong encryption ensuring that the burden of maintaining compliance is made that much easier and more cost-effectively. Redstor encrypts data at your site, before transit and it remains encrypted at all times whilst on our platforms. There is therefore, no chance of the data being intercepted in flight to our secure data centres and no risk of the data being read by an unauthorised 3rd party.

Security and data protection are at the forefront of Redstor’s offerings and we promise full compliance with the Data Protection Act. Redstor’s secure Online Backup service ensures data is safely backed up offsite in an encrypted format. Our file sync and share service, Centrastor, enables organisations to store and share files securely online from any device with an Internet connection and our CentraStage service enables support providers to guarantee that devices they support are regularly audited, patched and safely up-to-date for effective device management. Our Virtual Disaster Recovery service guarantees to have your systems up and running within minutes following a disaster.
