Madiba, an Icon of Peace and Justice

Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated annually on 18 July to honour the birthday of South Africa’s most famous son and former President. Madiba, as he was affectionately known, is remembered as a freedom fighter and global icon for peace and social justice.

So every year on his birthday, communities around the world are encouraged to remember Nelson Mandela and his spirit of determination to make a positive difference at any given opportunity. On Mandela Day, people are encouraged to dedicate 67 minutes of their time (representing the 67 years Mandela dedicated to public service) to volunteer work, community service, or acts of kindness.

The idea behind this initiative is to encourage people to take small steps that can have a significant impact on others and instil positive change. In 2013, Mandela Day marked Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday. It was a particularly significant year because Mandela was critically ill and hospitalised. The day was celebrated worldwide, with numerous events, activities, and charitable initiatives taking place in honour of Mandela’s legacy.

People from different walks of life came together to perform acts of kindness, ranging from supporting local charities and organisations to engaging in community development projects.

How we as Redstor contribute to Mandela Day, celebrated in South Africa and around the world, goes beyond just the 18th of July each year. Our commitment to making a positive impact extends through our CAREday initiatives, which involves all employees across our organization.

CAREdays align with the values Madiba represented, emphasizing the importance of giving back and making time for others. These initiatives are not limited to one specific day but are spread throughout the year, allowing our global Redstor staff to dedicate their time and efforts to giving back to their communities, supporting the environment, and more.

We firmly believe in the power of collective action and the positive change it brings. Our CAREdays embody this spirit, allowing us to contribute to Mandela Day’s legacy by making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Long may his legacy live on.
